The Shattered Dream Herbert Hoover and the Great Depression, by Gene Smith (read 27 Apr 2010) I found this 1970 book very good reading utill the final chapters---wherein the author lapses into feeling sorry for Hoover. The book paints a devastating picture of the awfulness of the Great Depression and the failure of Hoover and his crew to know what to do. It seems the present day Republicans would handle economic hard times the same way as Hoover, so we can be very glad that they are not in power now. The book tells the story of the Bonus Army very evenly and shows how Hoover and MacArthur mishandled that situation --and contrasts that with how things were done better in FDR's time. This book was very good reading and I found it instructive as to today's world ( ) geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
