Loved loved loved this one. Pratchett's spot-on skewering of Hollywood, the motion picture industry, and the "anything for a buck" marketing moguls was both ridiculously accurate and hilarious. ( )

Discworld goes Hollywood. Or perhaps Hollywood comes to Discworld?

Basically, Hollywood is a manifestation of a 'Great Old Ones' esque cult where the final cultist keeping the Holy Wood from arising once again dies. One thing leads to another, trolls get dressed up as elephants, and a movie hero has to save the day.

There's a lot of funny there, in particular as it pokes fun at Hollywood and the tropes of film and TV.

It's interesting seeing how Pratchett reimagined how things change when you get away from the technology of our world--popcorn exists as 'banged grains' (If you put butter and salt on it, it tastes like salty butter) while the movies themselves are created by way of rather fast painting imps).

On thing that was particularly neat about this book, having just come off the City Watch subseries is the introduction of Gaspode and Detritus, both of which we get to know decently well in those books. It's interesting to see the roots of their characters so much earlier.

Overall, it's a decent entry into the series. A bit of a let down after the City Watch series (much more disjointed, less story driven), but still worth the listen.

That absolute best part of listening to this as an audiobook? Where the narrator takes the role of a Troll woman singing in a nightclub. That's just... I literally burst out laughing at the gym. ( )

Pratchett is at his best when he's writing fun characters and at his worst when he's satirizing something too closely. Unfortunately here his two main characters are fairly average and the Holy Wood stuff is spread way too thick. Ridcully is probably my favorite character so I was happy to see him introduced here but he was only half the blustering, Teddy Roosevelt-type that he'll become in later books. Also the Bursar wasn't a gibbering crazy person so that was strange and disorienting. Overall I did like it and I was excited to see the wizards formed into a rough outline of the group I enjoy so much, but It was too forgettable for a reread and I wouldn't recommend this as the standalone book for a newcomer to try. one of his better discworld novels I thought, even though I've heard it said it's a bit of a stretch to basically do a Hollywood story on the discworld. while I agree that it does come across as a bit forced at times, the fact that he includes lots of characters and still manages to include ankh-morpork in the story too makes up for it. very enjoyable. read it and you won't be disappointed. She wasn't certain what the future held, but coffee would be involved if she had any say in the matter.
Most alchemists were nervous, in any case; it came from not knowing what the crucible of bubbling stuff they were experimenting with was going to do next.
Reality is not digital, an on-off state, but analog. Something gradual. In other words, reality is a quality that things possess in the same way that they possess, say, weight. Some people are more real than others, for example. It has been estimated that there are only about five hundred real people on any given planet, which is why they keep unexpectedly running into one another all the time.
The Discworld is as unreal as it is possible to be while still being just real enough to exist.
The universe contains any amount of horrible ways to be woken up, such as the noise of the mob breaking down the front door, the scream of fire engines, or the realization that today is the Monday which on Friday night was a comfortably long way off. A dog’s wet nose is not strictly speaking the worst of the bunch, but it has its own peculiar dreadfulness which connoisseurs of the ghastly and dog owners everywhere have come to know and dread. It’s like having a small piece of defrosting liver pressed lovingly against you.
"Why is it all Mr. Dibbler’s films are set against the background of a world gone mad?" said the dwarf.
Soll’s eyes narrowed. "Because Mr. Dibbler,” he growled, “is a very observant man.”
