Deze bespreking was geschreven voorLibraryThing lid Weggevers. Daisy MacCallum in her old age and with a weakened heart converts to Tibetan Buddhism and lives in a Sangha in Pennsylvania but is sent to her son’s home in San Jose for treatment and care that the monastery cannot provide. What follows is the sorting out of a dysfunctional family and a number of improbable characters and Daisy stubbornly preparing to die according to Tibetan Buddhist tradition. The narrative is somewhat catechetical in nature and replete with Tibetan Buddhist traditions, customs and philosophy but retains the framework for a good novel. Deze bespreking was geschreven voorLibraryThing lid Weggevers. "The Buddhist" is not a sermonizing book about Buddhism. What it is, is the story of Daisy McCallum, who has led a far from perfect life and who in her final years has become a Buddhist. The story is also about human relationships and Daisy's family's struggle to come to terms with her illness and how she copes with it in the context of her Buddhist beliefs. The story is very well told with great attention to detail and makes for very interesting reading. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

I found the writing to be noteworthy and have recommended it to a few friends who I knew would enjoy reading this type of book. It definitely falls into it's own category which makes it original and unique.
You don't have to be interested in Buddhism to read this book, for it is not solely written around this subject matter. The book is powerful and may bring tears to some readers eyes, but it also gives you a good heart warming feeling. I give this book 5/5. ( )
