I found this to be an enjoyable fast-paced action read although some parts were more drawn out than they needed to be. 3.5/5 ( ) Book source ~ KU Audible The Nowhere Man. He’s got skills. Mad skills. And he’ll use them to help a person out. But only once. No repeat customers. He’s just living his life to the best of his ability when his past comes knocking. Things are about to get hairy. Ho-ly Shit. I saw a review for this series on Twitter and wondered how I had never heard of it. I was happy it was listed on Kindle Unlimited but then I noticed something I had no idea about. KU has some books you can get with Audible. WTF?! So I grabbed it and listened on my drive home to North Carolina from Ohio. I have to tell you, it made the trip fly by! I was engrossed from the start. Orphan X is one hell of a rip roaring, action-packed, character driven book that will entertain and surprise. Evan Smoak, the Nowhere Man, is a character that will grab your heart and not let go. I love him. I love him for his skills, his faith in the Commandments taught to him by his mentor, his uncertainty in trying to live like a “normal” person, and his loneliness. He’s a character you can really sink your teeth into. Not in a kinky way or anything. The plot, the world, the writing are all great, but Evan is the reason this book is one of my favorite reads of the year. I said I love him, right? Just sayin’. The story is awesome, but having Scott Brick do the narrating makes it sublime. As far as I’m concerned he is Evan Smoak. And I’ve listened to two more books since. I know of which I speak. I told my husband about this book and he was all, meh. Then we traveled to Ohio together and I convinced him to listen to book 2, The Nowhere Man, with me. He was hooked from the start. See? I know what he likes even when he’s skeptical. LOL We even listened to Orphan X on the way back home even though I’d already read it. I didn’t mind though. If you’re a fan of books with the likes of Jason Bourne, Jericho Quinn, or Scot Harvath then this should be right up your alley. Orphan X (Evan Smoak) was taken into a secret programme as a child. He was trained for years as a killing machine and worked off the books for the government, which used him to liquidate unpleasant contemporaries. In the process, he made an enormous amount of money. But now he works independently for people who live on the fringes of society and need his help. He is the Nowhere Man. When a case is closed, all he asks is that his number be given to a person who needs his help. A young Latina woman asks for his help because a corrupt police officer wants to abuse her very young sister. In this first case, you learn about Evan's methods, as well as flashbacks from his training keep coming. His cover is also important, and we get to know Mia and Peter in the process. Only, Evan is on the hit list and former other Orphans try to eliminate him. Soon Evan doesn't know who is setting him up and who is sympathetic to him. He must pull out all the stops to survive and most importantly, to protect people he cares about. A great start to a new series, of which I will read the other books as well. I'm quite late to the Orphan X party but I'm still gonna throw a few streamers into the air and blow into one of those annoying party kazoo thingys. Story summary: Butt-kicking, gun toting, hot 'bad' guy turns good because of his code of honour to protect the vulnerable and exploited and any damsel in mortal peril and in the meantime baddies attempt to thwart him at every turn while he wrestles with his inner dark demons all while cuddling kittens. Awwww. Cue the flag (country of your choice) fluttering in the background as our muscled, dark glasses wearing hero walks slowly on to the next city and the next person in need of saving. *slow claps* Loved it. Books 2 and 3 on hold. Many thanks to NetGalley, St. Martin’s Press and Gregg Hurwitz for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. My thoughts and opinions are 100% my own and independent of receiving an advance copy. I have been wanting to start this series for a long time and boy am I glad I did! This is a high action, race to the finish thriller that will drag you along for quite a ride. Meet Orphan X. Trained as a child to be a government assassin, you know working for the good guys. However, once the program becomes defunct, Evan Smoak goes out on his own helping every day folks who are in trouble. Call the Nowhere Man and he will rescue you. When a call comes in Evan responds, however, there is something not right. Is he being set up? Who really needs help? Most importantly, who are they trying to kill. I love the Evan character. He is a bad ass who can get the job done, protects the innocent and has a heart of gold. The flashbacks are great to see how Evan grew up and was trained in the Orphan program. There are lots of gadgets and high tech toys that make it fun. But it is really one man’s struggle to stay alive. His skill against everyone else. I thought the pacing was great, lots of twists and turns and never knowing who to trust kept it all very exciting. Now that I’ve started, I can’t wait to read the rest of the series! geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

""Orphan X is the most gripping, high-octane thriller I've read in a long, long time. Hang onto your seat because Gregg Hurwitz will take you on a dizzying ride you'll not soon forget!" -Tess Gerritsen The Nowhere Man is a legendary figure spoken about only in whispers. It's said that when he's reached by the truly desperate and deserving, the Nowhere Man can and will do anything to protect and save them. But he's no legend. Evan Smoak is a man with skills, resources, and a personal mission to help those with nowhere else to turn. He's also a man with a dangerous past. Chosen as a child, he was raised and trained as part of the off-the-books black box Orphan program, designed to create the perfect deniable intelligence assets---i.e. assassins. He was Orphan X. Evan broke with the program, using everything he learned to disappear. Now, however, someone is on his tail. Someone with similar skills and training. Someone who knows Orphan X. Someone who is getting closer and closer. And will exploit Evan's weakness---his work as The Nowhere Man---to find him and eliminate him. Grabbing the reader from the very first page, Orphan X is a masterful thriller, the first in Gregg Hurwitz's electrifying new series featuring Evan Smoak"-- Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
