From Thailand to Nova Scotia, from Mexico to the American South, two-time James Beard Award-winner Robb Walsh takes a wild and witty journey in the world of adventurous eating. Robb Walsh has traveled the globe with his backpack and palate, taking stock of the world's culinary phenomena, and offering up a few of his own. In this collection of essays and recipes, he recounts his last few years of seeking out savory adventures. But whether dining in the Deep South or amongst those Cranky Europeans, Walsh finds that understanding the people and culture behind the dishes is often more challenging than simply digesting the food. And as cities across America become increasingly multicultural, one need not even leave town to unearth the most unusual international cuisine. Seasoned by Walsh's open mind and sly wisdom, Are You Really Going to Eat That? is an ode to the definitive power of food--to heal, communicate, and above all, make us swoon.… (meer)

Unlike many of the foods described, this book just seemed to be missing something. Perhaps, some pictures since these were pulled from magazines? Writing-wise, I felt I was being written down to. But hey, at least the book gave me some new cooking dies. ( )

I just happened to pick out this book from the shelves at our vacation rental cottage last week and didn't want to put it down. I found the stories behind the food and the humorous manner in which they were told engrossing. I agree with the other reviewer that the author isn't as "out there" as are Antony Bourdain and Andrew Zimmern, but that didn't reduce my enjoyment of this book in any way. I look forward to trying some of the included recipes. I will probably buy this book just to have them available. ( )

I really thought this would be more "out there" but I guess since I am a fan of Anthony Bourdain and Andrew Zimmern I have already been exposed to the outrageous durian and the other culinary oddities around the world. His writing, I think, is more of a journalistic nature, not something that motivates you to turn the page. All-in-all, it's not a bad read but if you want a little more "life" I would check out Anthony Bourdain's books.
