This is a book of short stories by Nguyen, author of The Sympathizer. All of the stories deal with Vietnamese refugees, and family relationships; but there is a lot of variety in the characters and situations, The writing is great. I think the most memorable story is "Fatherland" in which our narrator Phoung is visited in Vietnam, by an older half-sister Vivien, whose mother had taken her to the US when she was a baby. It was fascinating to see both sister's reacting to their father's shortcomings and to the roles assigned to them by their families.

In The Refugees, Viet Thanh Nguyen gives voice to lives led between two worlds, the adopted homeland and the country of birth. From a young Vietnamese refugee who suffers profound culture shock when he comes to live with two gay men in San Francisco, to a woman whose husband is suffering from dementia and starts to confuse her for a former lover, to a girl living in Ho Chi Minh City whose older half sister comes back from America having seemingly accomplished everything she never will, the stories are a captivating testament to the dreams and hardships of immigration. These short stories are beautifully written and masterfully crafted. This is my second experience with Viet Thanh Nguyen's writing and it did not disappoint. Great glimpses into the lives of Vietnamese post-war refugees. ( )
