This popular one-stop reference to the national flag of Canada has been updated and revised. Ann-Maureen Owens and Jane Yealland start with basic background on all the different flags that have flown over Canadian land, and why they flew there. They then turn to the fascinating play-by-play of how today's beloved maple leaf flag design came to be --- including how some government leaders took a personal interest in the design, as well as how ordinary Canadians were given the opportunity to weigh in with their own ideas. The authors further round out the flag topic with illustrations and descriptions of Canadian provincial flags, flag designs from other countries and a brief recap of how people have used flags throughout history. There are two craft activities, perfect for classroom use: one for making a Canadian flag and its flagpole, and one for creating international code signal flags. The lively, colorful art throughout the book, by Bill Slavin and Esperança Melo, brings the text to life and keeps it interesting and absorbing for young readers. Because the story of Canada's flag so closely follows the story of Canada's history, this title is a natural fit for any Canadian studies class or any social studies unit on the design and importance of national flags. There is also a map of Canada, providing a visual geography tool. The full index at the back and a list of internet sites for further information add to the usefulness of this unique resource.… (meer)

Ann-Maureen Owen and Jane Yealland have packed a lot of information about the history of Canada's flag (and the history of Canada itself) into this kids' book. As an American, I don't know much about Canada's history; we have so much history of our own to teach that there isn't much time to cover Canada in school. So everything in Our Flag was new to me. I was most surprised by how young Canada's flag is; I never knew that it only became official in my parents' lifetime!

The information is presented well, in small chunks of text that are easy to process. Bright, kid-friendly illustrations throughout help separate the text and enable readers to better understand all the facts being presented. I would have appreciated a simple flag timeline for reference, perhaps at the end of the book, as I found it difficult to keep all the dates straight. (Part of that difficulty arose because the information isn't presented in an entirely chronological order.)

Kids will enjoy the activities included near the end of the book, to make their own Canadian flag and to send coded messages with flags.

Note: I received a digital galley of this book through NetGalley. ( )

Truly the definitive guide to the Canadian Flag. There were some facts in there that I didn't know, so it was a very interesting book.

It's geared towards kids, but people of any age can enjoy the illustrations and the information provided. ( )

Reaction: The organization and style of this informational book make it a favorable pick for reluctant readers or students needing visuals to assist for comprehension. The table of contents, glossary and visually appealing layout provide ease to locate information. This is a great resource for inquiry projects. ( )
