Young Updike, but Updike just the same, his prose so insistently articulate that the characters and stories themselves wilt in the face of it. The best pieces are those where story and voice don't have to compete, such as The blessed man of Boston, my grandmother's thimble, and Fanning Island: "It is a simple story, a story of life stripped of the progenitive illusion, perfected out of history: the slam of a door in an empty house."
