Korte biografie
Hill was born to a "very ordinary" working-class family—his father was a professional footballer long before sportsmen earned riches—but began reading young. His mother was a great fan of Golden-Age crime writers, and he discovered the genre while fetching her library-books. After National Service (1955–57) and studying English at St Catherine's College, Oxford University (1957–60) he worked as a teacher for many years, rising to Senior Lecturer at Doncaster College of Education. In 1980 he retired from salaried work in order to devote himself full-time to writing.

Chief Superintendent Andy Dalziel and PC Peter Pascoe are sent to Holm Coultrain College to investigate the red-haired skeleton unearthed on campus.

A bronze memorial sculpture was being relocated to make room for a lab facility. When the base was pulled up bones fell out of it. This did not set well with a number of people.

There were conflicts among the faculty and among the student body. Originally an all-female campus (students and faculty), changes had been made. To keep up with the times, it was decided to change to a mixed campus, to help bring in more money for expansion. The old guard of the faculty was against it.

Among the student body was Franny Roote, well dressed, good looking, smooth moves and quite a following among the students, especially the females. What is his draw?

Talk of a Satan cult on campus, with faculty and student members, séances, and mid-night rituals cloaked in secrecy, are rumoured. Could there be ties to the skeleton?

Who is the skeleton? When was the death and by who and how? Other murders take place on campus and questions arise about the relationship between these happenings.

Dalziel and Pasco have a full slate of clues and suspect to tie into for the solutions. Twists, turns and blind alleys make for a complicated challenge for these men. Also a good read for the reader.

Couldn’t get beyond about a third of the way into the book. Too many pointlessly eccentric characters who weren’t appearing to pull together in the direction of any plot.

The old trick of splitting a central character into two very different parts and using the tension to create literary sparks has worked for writers as diverse as Rex Stout (Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin) and Patrick O'Brian (Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin).

Nobody in the mystery field does it better these days than Hill, whose down-and-dirty Inspector Dalziel (pronounced Dah-eel in the A&E TV series) jigs and jousts wonderfully with his smart, sensitive sidekick Pascoe.

Their latest outing is one of the best in the series, with Pascoe digging up some old bones and family secrets from his own past

A ravaged wood, a man in uniform long dead -- this is not a World War One battlefield, but Wanwood House, a pharmaceutical research centre. Peter Pascoe attends his grandmother's funeral, and scattering her ashes leads him too into wartorn woods in search of his great-grandfather who fought and died in Passchendaele. Seeing the wood for the trees is the problem for Andy Dalziel when he finds himself fancying an animal rights activist, depite her possible complicity in a murderous assault and her appalling taste in whisky. A mind-bending puzzle leading us on the wild side of the pastoral.

Convoluted story line, shifting between the first world war and the present day, mixed in with desertion, cowardice, and bent ex coppers being involved in animal experiments. I found this to be a so-so story, and not in a rush to read another

Exit Lines by Reginald Hill is part of the Dalziel and Pascoe series and as three old men die on a dark and stormy November night, we are left wondering how and why they met their fate. While one seems to have died during the course of a burglary, another died from a combination of a fall and exposure, and the third was a traffic accident, but at least one witness swears that a drunken Dalziel was the driver leaving the local reporters wondering if this is a police cover-up. Each elderly man left a dying statement that, instead of helping, actually made things even more confusing.

Although I am not this author's biggest fan, the plot here was interesting and complex. I found the author’s use of humour helped to keep the story on track. The issues of aging, death, and senility were used in a way that showed humanity and intelligence. Although Dalziel was mostly a background presence, Pascoe and others on the police team were able to bring the book to a satisfactory conclusion.
