Korte biografie
Lynn Joseph was born and raised on the island of Trinidad and is the author of books for children and young adults, including The Color of My Words, A Wave in Her Pocket, The Mermaid's Twin Sister and Coconut Kind of Day, all of which take place in the Caribbean. She travels extensively and has lived in the Dominican Republic, and on the Caribbean islands of Carriacou, Anguilla, and Water Island. She is also an attorney and mother of two wonderful sons, Jared and Brandt.

Beautiful and complex -- great language, simply told with a lot of nuances. I know, complex or simple? both, maybe. Sophisticated, but loving story about a born writer in the Dominican Republic.

Despite growing up discriminated against for her race, Bessie Coleman knew she was meant to do great things. After moving to Chicago to live near her brothers, they are sent off to war. When they return, they tell Bessie tales of female fighter pilots. This is all Bessie needs to hear to decide that she must go to aviation school in France. After passing her test, Bessie is the first black woman in the world to earn her pilot's license. This inspiring story of a woman who did not give up, despite the obstacles in front of her, is one that children of all ages could relate to. The dialogue in the story keeps it engaging and I would recommend it.… (meer)

I loved this book because this shows a family with a different culture that I am not used to. This book also shows a home language that I just recently learned in my TLS 411 class. Reading this book to children can really make them feel more comfortable pronouncing their own language.
