Simon Winchester was born in London, England on September 28, 1944. He read geology at St. Catherine's College, Oxford. After graduation in 1966, he joined a Canadian mining company and worked as field geologist in Uganda. The following year he decided to become a journalist. His first reporting toon meer job was for The Journal, Newcastle upon Tyne. In 1969, he joined The Guardian and was named Britain's Journalist of the Year in 1971. He also worked for the Daily Mail and the Sunday Times before becoming a freelancer. He is the author of numerous books including In Holy Terror, The River at the Center of the World, The Alice Behind Wonderland, The Professor and the Madman: A Tale of Murder, Insanity, the Making of the Oxford English Dictionary, and.Exactly: How Precision Engineers Created the Modern World. De gekwelde woordenaar (in het Engels gewoon The surgeon of Crowthorne) lijdt aan vele kwalen – het pretendeert een biografie te zijn van twee tot de verbeelding sprekende mannen en daarenboven ook nog eens de ontwikkeling van de Oxford English Dictionary te beschrijven. Het doet dat zonder voetnoten, zonder notenapparaat, zonder bibliografie (de paar paragraafjes 'aanbevolen literatuur' harkt een kind van tien ook wel bijeen), en overgiet dat rijkelijk met dat irriterende gepsychologiseer waar wel meer 'historische' boeken last van hebben.
Winchester springt van het ene onderwerp/de ene anekdote op het/de andere, vooruit en achteruit in de tijd, en slaagt er niet in om de drie invalshoeken (Murray, Minor en de geschiedenis van woordenboeken an sich) tot een enigszins leesbaar geheel te smeden. Feiten vormen niet de hoofdbrok, maar worden er slechts bijgesleurd ter illustratie van wat op een ander moment door een andere schrijver tot basis zou kunnen dienen voor een vrij saaie thriller. Nodeloze herhalingen, wilde veronderstellingen, ... doen je elke bladzijde opnieuw de wenkbrauwen fronsen en overtuigen je er uiteindelijk (halverwege toch maar weer ...) van dat de lectuur van het woordenboek zelf wellicht een aangenamer tijdverdrijf is dan het doorploegen van deze 'bestseller'.
