This series never fails to make me smile. It was so much fun meeting Heart , Brain and the rest of the gang again!

I love how important topics such as mental health, anxiety, work-life balance, and self-acceptance, among others, have been addressed with sensitivity and humor.

Divided into three segments, each of which begins with a heartfelt message from the author, this installment of the exceptional Heart and Brain series is, in turn, thought-provoking, laugh-out- loud funny and inspiring! It's definitely one of the best in the series!

Good things come in small packages. Sometimes good things aren’t so good when in large quantities. And that’s how I feel about these comics and cartoons. I do love seeing the random panels online or even daily on a calendar but all together in one book it’s just too much. There doesn’t seem to be any overarching storyline to keep you interested in turning the page. Maybe if I read these two pages a day instead of in one sitting, I would like it more. This is one of those “too much of a good thing” situations.

I love the cave man panel, heart is hilarious! This was a great collection of Nick's work. I love that Nick introduces each section with a bit more about his life and what he has been going through.

Any one of these panels could be turned into a motivational poster for you office cubicle.

Highly recommend.

I admit to loving The Awkward Yeti and following the (mis)adventures of Heart and Brain regularly, so this collection is an ideal book to use for both enjoyment and to break up more stressful reading, or whatever else I need breaks from.

Some of the comics speak a little less to me than others, but that is to be expected. That said, what makes them so popular is that they highlight things that most of us can relate to. So the ones that connect, which is the vast majority, almost feel like they were written for me. I imagine many other readers feel the same.

I would recommend this to any reader who likes to have a light but not meaningless book at hand for those moments you simply need something different. This is also a great gift, a gift of humor is usually welcome.

This is the first basically-cartoon book I have ever bought. It's also the first in a long time that I bought anything from a new bookstore. But it didn't look like this would end up in a used bookstore anytime soon, and even the used ones online retained the newbie price (if shipping is included). So now I gladly leave these glossy pages next to my bed for happy reading.

Or, as my communications instructors would say, I'm no longer a consumer but a costumer--I fell in to The Awkward Yeti's marketing strategy. Oh well. I'm not immune.

Heart and Brain essentially introduced me to webcomics and comics in general--others never resonated with me. However, The Awkward Yeti (hint hint, the bookstores list the author as Nick Seluk and not The Awkward Yeti, in case you're trying to find it on alphabetical shelves) integrates science and philosophy in the way most people experience it in everyday life. Not only that, but as a chronically ill person with multiple uncooperative organs, I've always joked with myself and nurses about the organs' personalities and why they squabble. This is exactly how the Heart and Brain comics operate, and I love it.

Many of the skits seem random, like filler episodes in between arcs or your favorite TV show, while the rest follow a logical sequence. Having a hard time waking up in the morning? Stay tuned, because Heart and Brain take turns trying to get Lars (The Awkward Yeti character) out of bed. Time for coffee? Read a series of coffee comics. Talking about art in one? The next is a scene in a museum. Later in the book the lot try to sleep, and fail for Heart and Brain reasons. As they experience more in life, i.e. the pages of the book, Brain contemplates more of big issues and Heart has slightly more mature responses. I love the consideration the author put into organizing the scenes.

A final perk I appreciate: I read the book wondering where my favorite one would appear...or if. It was the very last one. The climax. I'd imagine that one is one of The Awkward Yeti's favorites as well.

I'd like to thank Nick Seluk for putting things in perspective for me. Now I know it's not just me that has regular conversations with my internal organs. And some of them aren't as cheerful as I am.

Learning that my tongue plays devil's advocate makes complete and utter sense!

Also, Lettuce=Evil. That makes things clear too.

This may be one of my favorite reads!

I enjoyed this book! Several times I read a comic out loud and had to show it to my husband, saying "Heart is me!" "NO, no, brain is me!" I laughed out loud several times. Highly recommend. Jokes are on par with Hyperbole and a Half!

Heart and Brain: Gut Instincts: An Awkward Yeti Collection

I Picked Up This Book Because: Looked entertaining.

The Story:

It was entertaining. Heart is wild and a dreamer, Brain is much more practical and they obviously go through some trials trying to get along. This surprised me on the introspection inspiration these drawings lead to, I was kinda just expecting silly fun. It did go on a bit long for my tastes but maybe that’s because I digested it so fast.

The Random Thoughts:

3.5 Stars½

My two favorite characters from the series - Brain and Heart. Their polar opposites but both compliment the other in ways thats only possible due to WHO they are (well, WHAT they represent anyway). This might be my favorite yet of the three books.

Nearly each panel is both funny, and sentimental and/or intelligent and witty/wry. Not all are huge 'guffaws' or "lol", but nearly all are chuckles or a smirk inducing joke, with the added weight of the sentimentality or intelligence behind the panel due to the characters (brain and heart) involved.

Always been a big fan of Awkward Yeti and finding it as a whole book (two actually) at the Hershey Library was a fantastic shock to see. (They also had Fowl Language which will be picked up after these two are returned.)

The comics go from being funny, chuckle-inducing, to even being thought provoking.

Definitely goes with my list of comics I enjoy - Peanuts, Calvin and Hobbes, The Farside, B.C., Zits, and Pearls Before Swine.

Another great collection of poignant, funny, yet thought provoking comics from The Awkward Yeti. Many of these revolving around the brain/gut/heart; and the ways in which the three interact on a 'mental/emotional' and 'intuition' level.

Eyes: Look, there's a new book by The Awkward Yeti.
Heart: Buy it. NOW!
Brain: Calm down, Heart. The book isn't released yet.
Heart: So what? Let's request an ARC. You can be really dumb sometimes, Brain!
*Receives an Advance Review Copy*
Heart: I love Andrews McMeel Publishing! They've approved all our ARC requests so far. Let's start reading now.
Gut: I'm pretty sure the title is misleading. There isn't going to be a lot about me.
Heart: Doesn't matter. Let's read.
Gut: There is going to be a lot of stuff recycled from the website, with just a few new ones.
Brain: I second that. We have some chores to do. We can read it tomorrow.
Heart: It doesn't matter if we've read most of it before. We love The Awkward Yeti. Wouldn't hurt to reread.
Brain: Fine, we know what happens when we don't let Heart indulge.
*Reads the whole book in a sitting*
Gut & Brain: Told you
Heart: Well, it was still good.
Brain: Agreed.
Heart: Alright, we should browse and read more awkward yeti comics. We are definitely getting a me plushie. Also, a tongue with pizza plushie. Maybe even the gallbladder one, it is so cute. Oh, and we should get a coffee mug where Brain and I are featured.
Brain: Let's focus on the review first. That's what we were given the book for, an honest review.
Heart: Alright. Should we give this 3 stars or 5 stars?
Brain: Well, since we already reads most of it online, it felt like a 3 star, but to a new reader it would be 5 stars. We did love all the cartoon when we first read them. So, 4 stars maybe.
Heart: That's settled. Browse now. I need that coffee mug.
Brain: Hang on, let's assess our ranking of Awkward Yeti.
Heart: It's on the number one spot of web comics for me now.
Brain: That's what you say about all books right after you read them. Have you forgotten about Sarah's Scribbles?
Heart: True, I do love Adulthood is a Myth. The uterus is so cute. How come Yeti doesn't draw any uterus, I wonder?
Brain: Because Yeti is male and doesn't have one.
Heart: Ah, that's right, I forgot. I still like Yeti. I guess The Awkward Yeti and Sarah's Scribbles are tied up in my number one spot for web comics.
Stomach: Hello! I've been mumbling for an hour now and no one noticed. You're all so much into that book that you've forgotten to feed me. What's more, you're having some pointless conversation instead of writing a review. You all better wrap it up soon.
Brain & Heart: Aye, Aye, Captain!

After only reading this comic when someone shares it on social media I knew I would enjoy this and boy was I right. I wasn’t planning on tearing through it in one read but it was impossible to stop. Now I need to get the rest of the comics. I didn’t feel at all left out since this isn’t the first collection. Most of these comics are self-contained and self-explanatory. Brain is being logical and heart lets his emotions take control. A fun and entertaining read and I now need to pick up more of them.

This is a comic I have read bits and pieces of. When I got the chance to read a whole book, I jumped at it. All of the panels were good. Some were hilarious. I found myself laughing out loud. It was often relatable and always interesting. This was a really fun read and I highly recommend it.

I received a free ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

The first collection of the popular “Heart and Brain” webcomic. I enjoy reading these comics when people post them online, but I feel like I’ve already seen the best ones from this collection. I was hoping to discover new content, but none of the ones I hadn’t seen before wowed me. I may still pick up other collections of this comic in the future, but I don’t feel a need to purchase them for my personal shelves.½
