I always pronounced "clique" with a short i sound, but perhaps it's flexible. I hadn't heard it in a golf context, but then I don't play.

Still thinking about #3. I wouldn't think a "critique" would be grievous, but then I might just be too nice. Clarification welcome if available.

Crambo is not a freak, at least not this early in the afternoon. But your word has one correct element that none of the prior guesses have. I won't say what it is just yet.

Pedantic note on 2, 4

ALthough I've never seen it in writing, I think the golf reference in #2 ends in --eek, while the other ("Cabal...") ends in -ique. So, perhaps
"Cleek" should be put in with the "Nots".

Still seeking the word for #14, but I haven't found it yet. I suppose a Sikh could do all those things, or a geek, but I don't think those are it.

These last few words share the correct element that "freak" has.

I don't suppose geographical names have been admitted, but
I'll guess __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __, because I've always wondered why, being a Lusophone country, it is pronounced (in English, anyway)* by francophone rules:
a 3-syllable, rhyming with
"cleek", rather than a
4-syllable rhyming with "he say".

*I suppose its origin is neither French, Portuguese, nor English,
but from an African language.

In #14 I was going for "plastique" which has two main definitions. The one I was thinking of originally is a plastic explosive that is easily molded around an object. When I looked it up just to be sure, I found that "plastique" also refers to a ballet technique for mastering slow, controlled movement.

I have no idea what/who Bette Sans Souci is.

33Jim53
mei 17, 2013, 10:27 pm

Bette Sans Souci was the "real" name of the comic book character Plastique. I didn't know about the dancing term; I had been trying to think of a type of snake based on the initial clues. The blowing up led me to plastique, and now I've learned that it's a dancing term too, so I've learned one thing today, for which thanks!

I'm afraid Crambo is neither sleek nor gifted with much technique.

60> It's only one letter off from "sleek".

I will say that I don't 100% know if it rhymes with sleek. It seems like it should, but then again steak seems like it should rhyme with teak... I just thought up the letter combination and then googled to check that it was an actual word. I was getting desperate as your word seems to be a one syllable word beginning with s and ending in k, and that doesn't leave a whole lot of uncovered territory.

62Jim53
mei 22, 2013, 1:09 pm

Is it sleak? That's a new one on me. I googled it and it looked as if all the instances I found were actually misspellings of "sleek." Same for sliek.

You're right that Crambo's word starts with s and ends with k. There are four other letters, two consonants and two vowels, between the s and the k. One last hint: phonetically it's not a simple s.
