Looking for a book I read in the late 1970's or early 1980's that had a blind and possibly mute character who made beautiful clay sculptures of people's face by feeling rather than seeing them. I can remember very little of this one except a sculpture might have been a clue to a hidden valuable.

You say YA in the subject line ... young adult fiction??
Not a mystery, but this girl is blind (and not mute), and sculpts clay. You could rule it out since it doesn't have a mystery.

Oh, and it was from 1993, so obviously not it.

If you mean adult fiction, let me have a look...

Yes, the secret of the emerald star must be the book I remember, especially after reading about old mrs. Devery, and the guy who sucks on lemon drops! Can't wait to read it again. My mom radar out loud to the whole family on a long car ride when I was a kid. I'm waiting to recommend these books until I read them agian. Bookel, I am really amazed! I am trying to use google books advanced search myself before posting, but I never seem to hit on the right words. Thank you!

Found this book through intercounty library loan, and enjoyed re-reading it. I'm curious what kids born in the 2000's would think of it. Characters are a bit stiff, and much less humor than more modern YA books. Still, the ideas of the story, and the character relationships are intriguing. For a 9-11 yr old, it might be a fun mystery that also expands the way they think about disabilities, and people with backgrounds different from their own.
