For something of quite a while now, Julie has been enthusing about the forthcoming reading of alterrobert::Robert Alter's modern translation of the book of Genesis, with commentary.

In my experience there are two schools of thought on how to approach the Bible and the the Torah. Some people will only allow those writings to be touched only when dressed in your Sabbath finest, with thoughts lofty and directed towards the Eternal Values. Others dismiss the same writings as the legends and myths of some bronze-age people.

The 5057::Iliad and Odyssey are myths and legends of a bronze-age people. Likewise, the traditions of another ancient nation are thoroughly worthwhile as literature. It is a disservice to those magical poems and narratives to relegate them to the niche they currently gather dust in.

But enough of my rantings. Let us start the introduction to Genesis.

Episode 140 at 2010-11-06 begins the Genesis proper. I do recommend listening to the notes to the reader, though.

Several comments on Genesis so far.

1) I love Many Waters! It was a fun story but also made me look at the story in the Bible differently. Like what was it like to have your grandfather taken up by God. Love all of her stories

2) During the story of Sarai was yelling at Abram about Hagar treating her badly. The commentary said there is nothing in the english language that is that violent in two words as the ones used in the Hebrew. I instantly had the picture of a women in labor yelling at her husband pop into my head. ( you bas****)

3) I love the animal sounds in the background. Like the podcast Sticks and String it kind of gives a feeling of listening to a friend in their home.

I have more but I can't think of them at the moment...
