Sensitively and beautifully told story of the effects of grief on adults vs children. Short, but packs a big punch. Themes of homelessness, community, family, persons with autism and disabilities, love. Recommended for adults as well as children. ( ) I can't really describe how beautiful this book is. I finished it in barely more than an hour's time reading, it hurt me, it made me cry, it was beautiful. Anything else is spoilers or telling pieces of the whole. This is a great book. No idea how it's this author's first. From page one to finish it was a captivating read, poetic, friendly, this book brimmed with love and the internal problems of death and the passage of a loved one. It was a great thing to read from start to finish(I'm repeating myself, that's how you know it's good). Most of all, this book was real. Real and raw and sometimes a punch in the gut. I read this book with a heavy heart. No 11 year old should have to go through the death of a parent. But that age old saying "everything happens for a reason"'doesn't even begin the explain why suddenly Cally "sees" her mom appear and always sees a dog at the same time. The connection hits you like a wall on page 179 and will give you such goosebumps. Love doesn't even describe how much I loved this book! I have 5 students reading it and a waiting list of kids hoping to know Cally. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

Fifth-grader Cally Louise Fisher stops talking, partly because her father and brother never speak of her mother who died a year earlier, but visions of her mother, friendships with a homeless man and a disabled boy, and a huge dog ensure that she still communicates.
