Abaddon is een duivel die heerst over het dodenrijk en in de Bijbel wordt hij de engel des afgronds genoemd. Hiermee zet de titel van dit derde deel van de boekenreeks The Expanse, De Poort van Abaddon, gelijk de toon. In het hele boek wordt er dan ook voortdurend op het randje van de afgrond gebalanceerd. Een afgrond die je alleen echt goed kunt begrijpen als je voorgaande boeken ook hebt gelezen. En wat mij betreft hadden de eerste drie delen ook in een deel uitgegeven kunnen worden, gezien het doorlopen van het verhaal. Dit zou alleen erg onpraktisch zijn want alle delen bestaan uit ruim vijfhonderd bladzijden.
In dit deel komt het personage Melba naar voren, de vermomming van Clarissa Mao, dochter van de voorheen zo machtige handelaar Mao die door Holden is ontmaskerd en voor altijd achter de tralies is gezet. Melba zint op wraak op Holden waarbij ze steeds meer grenzen overgaat. Haar ontwikkeling in deze en dan in het bijzonder in combinatie met predikante Anna vind ik adembenemend interessant beschreven.
Dan zijn er nog enkele andere personages waar ik iets minder grip op krijg omdat ik eerst de televisieserie gezien heb en deze personages daarin op een andere manier gerepresenteerd zijn. Dit geldt met name voor een aantal belangrijke Belters. Ondanks de voor mij soms wat verwarring blijven ook hun acties en beweegredenen mij van begin tot eind boeien.
Zoals in voorgaande delen zijn alle mensen werkelijk mensen van vlees en bloed met hun nukken en verlangens wat deze serie dan ook zo machtig mooi maakt. ( )

In dit deel komt het personage Melba naar voren, de vermomming van Clarissa Mao, dochter van de voorheen zo machtige handelaar Mao die door Holden is ontmaskerd en voor altijd achter de tralies is gezet. Melba zint op wraak op Holden waarbij ze steeds meer grenzen overgaat. Haar ontwikkeling in deze en dan in het bijzonder in combinatie met predikante Anna vind ik adembenemend interessant beschreven.
Holden, toch ergens wel dé hoofdpersoon, maakt zo zijn eigen avontuur mee waarbij hij steeds een beetje meer over het mysterieuze protomolucuul te weten komt, niet in de laatste plaats door de oppoppende beeltenis van de veel eerder overleden Miller.
Dan zijn er nog enkele andere personages waar ik iets minder grip op krijg omdat ik eerst de televisieserie gezien heb en deze personages daarin op een andere manier gerepresenteerd zijn. Dit geldt met name voor een aantal belangrijke Belters. Ondanks de voor mij soms wat verwarring blijven ook hun acties en beweegredenen mij van begin tot eind boeien.
