A lot left I'm still unpacking about this book. I simultaneously had a hard time getting into it and also was riveted every time I picked it up. Very dark and gory, and plotted kind of like if The Hunger Games was rated R and set in space. Mars is populated but humanity exists in a strict class system given color names, with Reds at the very bottom, and Golds at the tippy top. Darrow, a Red, infiltrates the Golds for revenge and competes in their school's war games. In a lot of ways this felt very YA dystopian-coded, just bloodier. Regardless I'm interested to see where the rest of the series goes - there are a lot of thoughtful notions about class, society (and capitalism essentially), with compelling characters. I bloodydamn loved this book. The characters felt real, visceral, and yet nobody felt invulnerable; the consequences felt real, for every character, even for those the reader comes to love. The protagonist is complex, and has complex relationships with many characters; and this is so clearly an anti-totalitarian, pro-class solidarity novel that I highly recommend. Break the chains! Four and a half stars, aspiring to five. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations. Yet he spends his life willingly, knowing that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children. But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and sprawling parks spread across the planet. Darrow and Reds like him, are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class. Inspired by a longing for justice, and driven by the memory of lost love, Darrow sacrifices everything to infiltrate the legendary Institute, a proving ground for the dominant Gold caste, where the next generation of humanity's overlords struggle for power. He will be forced to compete for his life and the very future of civilization against the best and most brutal of Society's ruling class. There, he will stop at nothing to bring down his enemies . . . even if it means he has to become one of them to do so. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
