( ) 4.5 stars This one's for the anglophiles out there who like a dash of the supernatural (or should I say "supranatural"?)in their fiction. I loved the sinister atmosphere, and it was easy to sink into the story right away. The Oversight's London and surrounding countryside make a delicious setting, and Charlie Fletcher's description of his world is very well done. The story jumps around among characters, both noble and villainous. It jumps around too much, in my opinion, and that's the only thing that bothered me about the book. It didn't bother me enough to deter me from the next one though, which unfortunately isn't out yet. The novel left enough resolved to be satisfying and enough mystery to make me eager for the sequel. The Oversight (Oversight Trilogy, #1) by Charlie Fletcher I found this great fantasy book on sale on Chirp and now I need the next books! Too bad they are not on sale yet! This book is a historical type fantasy with people that have strange gifts or powers. The ones that use their powers for good are called The Oversight. They keep the other powerful players from harming people. The characters, world building, and atmosphere is phenomenal! The story is based around a small handful of people with powers. One ends up falling through a mirror that is actually a doorway to another place. It's certainly an exciting adventure. It starts a major snowball effect in both worlds. More dramatic action is also happening at the both places. My favorite character is the golem! Everyone in here seems to have unique characteristics! Even the hand that was cut off! Want something fresh to read in fantasy? Like books with a feel of Victorian times? Check out this book! This is going in my Goodreads favorite folder! Great narration! Now this was an unexpected treat, with the kind of creepy fae I enjoy reading about and a collection of appealing law keepers in dire straights. Features I enjoyed: a victorian flair, a very interesting cast of characters, circus, hedgerows, and a pleasing affinity for knives. Also, several side characters that seem to have potential to join the fray and some very annoyingly powerful bad guys that have not triumphed yet, by some weird chances. Kept me on the edge of my seat, and relieved me significantly whenever the danger passed -- although that's never a guarantee, and I worry over the future. Advanced Reader's Copy provided by Edelweiss. Set in Victorian London, Lucy Harker is smuggled to the Oversight, a secret society dedicated to keep people safe from the many forces of evil. Lucy eventually is shown some secrets and disappears into a mirror, taking part of her host, Sara Falk with her. Lucy then falls in with a carney crowd, who seem interested in her, but have their own agendas. Meanwhile Sara starts to fall apart, jeopardizing the Oversight, which must have five members. Her companions try to help save their society and leader: the loyal but dangerous Mr. Sharp, the wonderful ex-pirate Cook, even a golem for good measure. I struggled with some of the different subplots, especially the politics in London, the brothers who "rescued" orphans only to recruit them for their criminal enterprises, an evil spirit sucking the life out of the living, etc. Not knowing the motivations (good or bad) for some of the central characters created suspense. Unsure if I will read Book #2. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
