This story filled my heart with warmth as I read about a Jewish family living in New York who attends a package party to raise money to help other Jewish families get to America. This would be good to read children about sharing and helping those in need. There is a special room at the package party where men can go in secretely to either leave money in a box or take what they need for their families. Zeesie sneaks in the room and leaves the only dollar she has to help anyone in need. I really enjoy this storyline where a young child is able to recognize that others may need help more than she does. It delivered a powerful message about giving and receiving and doing all that you can to help others. ( )

I chose this book because it is a community of Jewish immigrants who work together to support each other. All of the money from their auction goes to help bring other families to the United States. This goes to illustrate social studies standard 2.16 “analyze and interpret human behaviors, social gatherings, and institutions to better understand people and the relationships among individuals and groups.” Through observing one social event in this book, it is easy to tell how the individuals of this community interact.

Zeesie's character is very moral. When she sees her dad take eight dollars, she gives up her one dollar bill in hopes to make it right. I think reading this to younger children will help to establish a good sense of what is wrong and what is right. ( )

This is a story of a Jewish girl names Zeesie who had a dollar.she went to a package party for the Zborovah Society. In the great ballroom, there was a door that the men would take turns going behind. Zeesie’s father told her that it was where men, depending o their financial situation, could leave or take money. They went one at a time so no one would ever know which they did. To her shame she watched as he said a prayer and took eight dollars. Feeling terrible for having seen what she knew she shouldn’t, she left her dollar in the box and snuck out.

This shows a very giving girl, hopefully this would rub off on the readers.

This story is about immigrants in New York in the 1930's. It talks about how everyone helped each other out and gave what they could and took what they needed. By holding these "package parties," people made it through tough times and had some joy in their lives! ( )
