Lovely story (I am a huge Katherine Applegate fan) and a great message for young readers -- they can make a difference and be stewards of nature. (Wish I had a hummingbear!) ( )

Willodeen lernt von ihrem Vater die Liebe zur Natur und zu den Tieren. Sogar und vielleicht besonders die stinkenden und lärmenden „Kreischer“ finden ihre Neugier und Zuneigung. Durch eine Abschussprämie reduziert sich deren Zahl um das Dorf herum drastisch und Willodeen ist besorgt. Denn auch die beliebten niedlichen „Summbärchen“ kehren in diesem Jahr nicht zum Überwintern zurück. Das Mädchen macht sich ihre eigenen Gedanken und stellt Nachforschungen an. Die Erkenntnis, die Willodeen sucht (und findet), ist alles andere als überraschend; die Kleinigkeiten und das Drumherum machen den Zauber der Geschichte aus.
Schon die Widmung und das Zitat zum Buchbeginn hatten mich sofort für sich eingenommen. Dann lernte ich Willodeen kennen und war begeistert.
Die ganze Geschichte liest sich wie ein Märchen: Handlung und Menschen nah am bekannten Leben; die Umgebung ein wenig mystisch, voller wunderlicher und fantasievoll beschriebener Tiere; dazu einen kleinen Hauch Magie.
Das Buch ist voller wundervoller Sätze über das Leben, die Menschen und die Natur, die sich zitieren lassen. Die poetische und märchenhafte Sprache sowie die sympathischen Protagonisten lassen in eine Welt eintauchen, die grausam und schön zugleich ist- ganz wie die Welt, in der wir leben.
Unterstützt wird diese traumhafte Erzählung durch wenige, aber liebevoll detailreiche Illustrationen aus der Feder von Charles Santoso.
Den deutschen Untertitel des Buches finde ich etwas irreführend, lenkt aber hoffentlich das Interesse potentieller Lesender auf dieses bezaubernde Werk. ( )

Retelling: The book is set in the fantastical town of Perchance, where the strange native wildlife plays an important role in both the town's problems and its attractions. A young girl named Willodeen becomes disconnected with the humans in the town when her own family is taken from her in a mighty forest fire, and she is taken in by a kind older couple of thespians who make it their mission to help her reconnect. Willodeen has always had a special connection to nature, and spends endless hours recording changes in her environment in her notebook. Two animals in particular take centerstage, the one for its vices (the skreecher), and the other for its virtues (the hummingbear). When the beloved hummingbears stop migrating to perchance, Willodeen has to overcome her shyness to report on her findings and save the town.

Thoughts and feelings: Willodeen felt like a real activist to me. When the cause is right, people can overcome their greatest fears and push the limits of their comfort to accomplish what they know is right. The book makes you really root for Willodeen, and Collin is just delightful.

Easy to read, quick paced story that will appeal especially to fans of The Lorax. The setting is Earth-like, but all the species of plants and animals are slightly different; culture feels like turn of the twentieth century technology (railroads, food scarcity, craftsmanship). The central character is a girl whose family has died in a fire. She befriends an artistic boy and they try to learn more about two species of wild animals that are nearly extinct in their area. Magic happens, and eventually their efforts help heal their community. ( )
