riverwillow: Both 'Neverwhere' and 'Rivers of London' (US title 'Midnight Riot') evoke a magical fairy tale London which sometimes feels more authentic then any real life guide to the city.

souloftherose: It's difficult to explain this recommendation without giving spoilers to one or other of the books. There were certain plot elements to Rivers of London/Midnight Riots which made me think of The Big Over Easy. And both books have a well-developed sense of humour.… (meer)

andreas.wpv: Different type of protagonist and friends, but dealing with the un- or supernatural, solving crimes and preventing disasters.
This is very similar though in style and tone, mood of the story. It is tense, yes, but holds no horror or exceeding brutality. The protagonist is human, and like a human, and the story has an undercurrent of kindness that many novels miss. And it is funny at times, from gentle humor to laugh out loud.… (meer)

Neem een politieroman, waarin een moordzaak onderzocht en opgelost wordt. Neem Harry Potter. En neem de stad London, met zijn lange geschiedenis en de bijbehorende mythologie. Gooi die drie elementen op een hoop, roer ze door elkaar en je hebt een indruk van wat je kan verwachten van Rivers of London, het eerste deel van de gelijknamige serie die inmiddels uit een stuk of negen boeken, een aantal graphic novels, korte verhalen en aanvullende audioboeken bestaat. De serie is geschreven door de Londense (scenario)schrijver Ben Aaronovitch.
Centraal karakteris Peter Grant, een jonge Londense politieagent die er aan het eind van zijn opleidingsperiode bij toeval achter komt dat hij over magische krachten beschikt: een getuige wiens verklaring hij opneemt blijkt namelijk een geest te zijn. Het is door deze bijzondere eigenschap dat hij terecht komt bij de minuscule magische afdeling van de Londense politie. Al snel raakt hij tot over zijn oren betrokken bij een moordonderzoek met bovennatuurlijke elementen.
Wat opvalt aan Rivers of London is de enorm humoristische schrijfstijl, met veel snedige verwijzingen naar bijvoorbeeld de Harry Potter-serie en Star Wars. Dat maakt het echt een plezier om te lezen. Aaronovitch is duidelijk een kenner van de Londense geschiedenis en mythologie en verwerkt die op een mooie manier in het verhaal. Omdat ik het boek in London las, gaf het mijn bezoek een extra dimensie: ik liep letterlijk door dezelfde straten als Peter Grant, kon even gaan kijken waar “het lijk” eigenlijk precies lag en kon ineens allerhande weetjes oplepelen over de (deels ondergrondse) zijrivieren van de Thames. Ook het multiculturele karakter van Londen komt mooi terug in het verhaal.
In vergelijking met de Harry Potter-serie (en ja, die vergelijking ga je toch maken) is Rivers of London weliswaar veel grappiger, maar zijn de karakters een stuk minder sterk uitgewerkt. Peter Grant accepteert bijvoorbeeld wel erg gemakkelijk dat hij blijkbaar magische talenten heeft en zet deze binnen de kortste keren zonder al te veel moeite in. Dat er links en rechts om hem heen doden vallen doet hem niet veel; hij heeft meer aandacht voor het vrouwelijk schoon in zijn omgeving. Dat maakt dat de vrouwelijke karakters in het boek nogal eendimensionaal uitpakken.
Om de vervolgdelen nu onmiddellijk ook te gaan lezen vond ik het boek net niet interessant genoeg. Vooral omdat het originele van de mix van fantasy en detective er dan wel wat vanaf is. Evengoed zou ik bij een volgend bezoek aan Londen wel overwegen om deel 2 mee te nemen. Daarvoor is het precies licht, vermakelijk en educatief genoeg. ( )
