Vlak voor het uitbreken van WO I blijken er in het VK Duitse spionnen actief. Een flatgenoot van de verteller komt achter hun plannen en beschrijft die in code in een boekje. De man wordt vermoord in de flat van de verteller en die moet vluchten, zowel voor de politie die hem van moord verdenkt als voor de Duitse spionnen. Er volgt een wilde vlucht met veel verkleedpartijen door heel het VK. Uiteindelijk wordt er wel een plan verijdeld, maar dit kan het uitbreken van de oorlog drie weken later niet voorkomen.
