I am loving it so far. So interesting and creepy and different from the generic Dracula movies. ( ) About halfway through reading Dracula, I paused to look up whether Bram Stoker had, like many other Victorian writers, produced his work in serial form and been paid by the word. Apparently not! Which is mildly astounding. After an atmospheric and gripping opening in which naive English lawyer Jonathan Harker finds himself trapped in the remote castle of the vampire count himself, this degenerates into a meandering, wheel-spinning slog. The book could easily have been half as long and would have been twice as good. Many of the words omitted could be the dialogue placed in the mouth of Abraham van Helsing, a supposed Dutchman who exclaims in German and whose syntax is absolutely unbelievable as Dutch language speaker speaking in English. The references to the "duck thoughts" and the "child-brain" were so frequent and so irritating I found myself rooting for Dracula. I appreciate the rampant homoeroticism, I appreciate that this paved the way for a century plus of pop culture, but this was so underwhelming. Never ever expected that this would be among the books I read. I have a phobia against vampire stories. But this was a must because it is a classic, and the audio version did help a lot. Thoroughly enjoyed the book, though like some other reviewers said, its mood changes suddenly at around 25%. Stick with it and the whole narrative gets back on track soon after. Of course, it would have been far scarier to me if I had read it in my younger years, but as of now, I'm just happy I read it! :D ************************** Join me on the Facebook group, Readers Forever!, for more reviews, book-related discussions and fun. This took me forever to read. Maybe I would have had a higher opinion of the book had I read it in fewer sittings. I just couldn't do it. I don't know if it was the stilted manner in which Van Helsing spoke or the slow pacing throughout the middle of the book. There were sections of the book that I thought were great, but there were just not enough of them to keep my interest. The beginning starts out with Jonathan Harker held captive by Count Dracula in his mansion in Transylvania. I thought this was a fantastic beginning and I was totally on board. The epistolary format allowed me to see exactly what was going through Harker's mind as he fully realizes the situation he's in. His earliest journal entries are full of superstitions and doubts and those niggling feelings. By the time he finally leaves, he is so out of his mind with fear and crazy thoughts that he's admitted to a sanitarium. It was awesome. I really enjoy being inside of a crazy person's head (other than my own). Afterwards, more characters are introduced and the very slow ramping up to the next bit of scary stuff. I found myself irritated with Van Helsing more than once, as he tends to come off as a pompous, secretive, misogynistic ass. And it seems that he really likes to talk. A lot. About not much of anything that can be understood by anyone in the room. Overall, I'm glad I read it but I don't see myself picking it up again.
