Happy New Year! I hope 2018 is a year full of health, happiness, and good books. What are you reading this first month of the year?
2paruline
Happy New Year to everyone! I've got Silas Marner and Exercises in style on my night stand.

I'm in the final push to finish In Remembrance of Lost Time. Almost done with volume 6 and then on to the final volume 7!

I'm reading Time of Silence and not liking it much at all, but really waiting for my copy of the new group read to surface from the depths of my daughter's room. I hope.

I'm reading The Scarlet Letter and quite enjoying it.

Just finished The Moonstone, which was great. I have two group reads next on my list City of God and Fugitive Pieces. Better late then never, I guess.

I think I'm going to start Middlemarch this month. I read it a long, long time ago when I was probably too young to really appreciate it, so I'm going for it again.

Hunger and maybe also Alias Grace at the same time.
10Deern
(Over-?)Ambitiously started 3 listed books: The House of the Seven Gables, The Country Girls and Trainspotting.

I've started Young Torless hoping for a quick read, but the lovely prose requires a slower pace.

>10 Deern: Never over ambitious :) But then we probably all agree I have a too-many-on-the-go problem...
Started Adam Bede and Democracy. Still - STILL! plugging away at The Last World, Shikasta London Fields and Last of the mohicans.
Democracy and the first three of the older ones I hope to finish this month. That last one may be hanging around for a long long time.

My first book from this list this year is Embers by Sandor Marai.

>14 japaul22: I would say it was. Congratulations. I'm not sure I could even try to read the whole thing but your descriptions in your own thread do give me a little twinge of interest.

>12 BekkaJo: Finished Democracy and London Fields - both highly recommended (in very different ways).

>14 japaul22: You could add War and Peace and call it a pretty succesful year...!

Starting Neuromancer on paper, and on audio listening to The Gate at the Stairs. I feel that the latter may be one of those books where I wonder how it got onto the list. It's not terrible, just ordinary. Maybe it will improve!

>18 annamorphic: I loved A Gate at the Stairs. I don't know how it translates to audio, but I enjoyed the experience of reading it very much. I hope it improves for you!

>18 annamorphic: supposedly because it is perfect.

My recommendations are the Walking Drum by Louis L'Mour (not a western) and Shibumi by Trevanian
22gypsysmom
I just started listening to Half of a Yellow Sun. It's early days yet but I think it is going to be a good one.

Finally finished The Last World - ended up really liking it, but it's definitely one of those books you need to focus on and immerse yourself in. I read it in far too bitty a manner and it suffered for it.
Started In the Forest and The Lost honor of Katherina Blum.

Finished The Old Devils and started Underworld.
25Deern
Finished Trainspotting and The Country Girls, but House of the seven Gables is a drag.
Started two books in Italian which will take a while:
- The Moon and the Bonfires by Cesare Pavese, this month's group read
- The Truce by Primo Levi
Edit 29/01/2018: (this one isn't a 1,001?!? It should be!)

Finally caught up with group reads, so I'm about to start The Moon and the Bondfire. I have the massive The Tale of the Genji on deck, which will certainly take me into February.
