JonTheTerrible: The pace of these books are similar as well as the topics they cover: society and government. The science plays only a small role in both books but is present enough to successfully build the worlds in which the characters inhabit.
corporate_clone: It is difficult not to compare Dune and Hyperion, even though both series have major differences in terms of tone, style and philosophy. Those are two long, epic, elaborate and very ambitious sci-fi masterpieces where religion plays a key role. I would highly recommend the fans of one to check out the other.… (meer)

Why is Blanch’s influence on Dune worth recognizing? Celebrating Blanch is not a means to discredit Herbert, whose imaginative novel transcends the sum of its influences. But Dune remains massively popular while The Sabres of Paradise languishes in relative obscurity, and renewed public interest in Blanch’s forgotten history would be a welcome development.

In een luisterrijk verre toekomst, vele duizenden jaren van nu, wordt het Geslacht Atreides op keizerlijk bevel gedwongen zijn erfplaneet te verlaten en een nieuw leen te aanvaarden, de onbarmhartigste, meest ongastvrije planeet die menselijk heelal kent: de Woestijnwereld Duin.
Voortaan zal Duin de zetel van het Geslacht zijn - maar de vijandige machten achter de troon rekenen erop dat Atreides niet lang de heerschappij over Duin zullen bezitten. Daar is deze wereld veel te kostbaar voor. Duin is uniek: de enige winplaats van de zogeheten melange of specie, een zeldzame stof die onmisbaar is voor het traditionele functioneren van het heelalrijk. Zonder de paranormale trance die de specie opwekt, kunnen de stuurlieden van de Hooglineischepen hun weg in de ruimte niet vinden en bestaat er geen interstellair verkeer meer, en zonder ruimteschepen stort alles in; zonder de specie zouden de adellijke Geslachten genoegen moeten nemen met een leven van normale duur.
De dagen van de Atreides op Duin zijn overbiddelijk geteld. Spoedig komt Paul Atreides, de jonge kroonprins, bijna alleen te staan voor de immense taak om de nieuwe planeet, die zo uiterst vijandig is voor het menselijk leven, te behouden voor zijn familie. Hij vlucht met een handvol getrouwen de woestijn in om een guerrillaoorlog te beginnen, maar het vlamhete zand is het domein van de trotse Vrijmans. Zij zijn de enigen die op eigen kracht in harmonie met de planeet weten te leven.
