Karen Louise Erdrich was born on June 7, 1954 in Little Falls, Minnesota. Erdrich grew up in Wahpeton, North Dakota, where both of her parents were employed by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. She is a member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa. Erdrich graduated from Dartmouth College in 1976 toon meer with an AB degree, and she received a Master of Arts in creative writing from Johns Hopkins University in 1979. Erdrich published a number of poems and short stories from 1978 to 1982. In 1981 she married author and anthropologist Michael Dorris, and together they published The World's Greatest Fisherman, which won the Nelson Algren Award in 1982. In 1984 she won the National Book Critics Circle Award for Love Medicine, which is an expansion of a story that she had co-written with Dorris. Love Medicine was also awarded the Virginia McCormick Scully Prize (1984), the Sue Kaufman Prize (1985) and the Los Angeles Times Award for best novel (1985). In addition to her prose, Erdrich has written several volumes of poetry, a textbook, children's books, and short stories and essays for popular magazines. She has been the recipient of numerous awards for professional excellence, including the National Magazine Fiction Award in 1983 and a first-prize O. Henry Award in 1987. Erdrich has also received the Pushcart Prize in Poetry, the Western Literacy Association Award, the 1999 World Fantasy Award, and the Scott O'Dell Award for Historical Fiction in 2006. In 2007 she refused to accept an honorary doctorate from the University of North Dakota in protest of its use of the "Fighting Sioux" name and logo. Erdrich's novel The Round House made the New York Times bestseller list in 2013. Her other New York Times bestsellers include Future Home of the Living God (2017). Het verhaal in ‘The Sentence’ volgt Tookie, een Native American vrouw van een jaar of 50, die na jaren in de gevangenis in een boekwinkel is gaan werken en probeert een kalm leven te leiden na al haar uitspattingen van vroeger. Die kalmte wordt helaas verstoord door Flora, een klant van de boekwinkel, die weliswaar is overleden, maar toch als een soort poltergeist terug blijft keren naar de winkel. Erdrich draait hier bewust een bekend (Amerikaans) horror-cliché om, want hier zijn het niet de uitgemoorde ‘indianen’ die wraak komen nemen op de moderne Amerikaan, maar is het juist een Amerikaanse vrouw die haar intense verlangen om ook een ‘indiaan’ te zijn zelfs na haar dood niet los kan laten en bezit wil nemen van Tookie.
Nu klinkt dat bijna als een klassiek horror-scenario, maar dit boek valt zeker niet in de categorie horror en is ook niet eng. The Sentence is eerder een kalm boek, af en toe zelfs wat traag voortkabbelend. Tookie doet buiten haar werk in de boekwinkel ook andere dingen: ze is getrouwd en probeert een goede relatie op te bouwen met haar man en haar wispelturige stiefdochter, ze ontmoet vrienden. Wat het verhaal zo intrigerend maakt, naast de bespiegelingen over het leven van Native Americans in het moderne Amerika, is de setting.
‘The Sentence’ speelt zich namelijk af in het heel recente verleden, tijdens de corona-pandemie. De schrijfster heeft het boek ook in die periode geschreven, wat het af en toe wat dagboekachtig maakt. Dat gevoel wordt versterkt doordat het verhaal zich voor een belangrijk deel afspeelt in een boekwinkel die verdacht veel lijkt op de boekwinkel van Louise Erdrich zelf (Birchbark Books in Minneapolis). De eigenaresse van de fictieve boekwinkel heet zelfs ook Louise. En Minneapolis, dat is de stad waar George Floyd werd vermoord door een politie-agent, in de zomer van 2020. Ook die gebeurtenis en de daaropvolgende protesten spelen een belangrijke rol in het verhaal.
Hoewel de setting dus doorspekt is met actualiteit en realiteit, is het verhaal verder volledig fictief. Is het een aanrader? Waarschijnlijk niet voor iedereen, je moet zeker tegen wat traagheid kunnen. Wat het de moeite waard maakt is dat het een tijdsbeeld geeft van een periode die we nu hard proberen te vergeten, maar die heel wat spokende wonden heeft achtergelaten. Daarnaast maakt de setting in de boekwinkel ‘The Sentence’ tot een echt een echt boeken-boek. Het wemelt van de leestips en laat je zeker achter met een langere wil-ik-lezen-lijst dan je had voordat je aan het lezen begon.… (meer)
