I read my first ever Emile Zola: The Fortune of the Rougons which is the first in Zola's famous Rougon-Macquart series of 20 novels to which he dedicated his whole writing career. And what a masterpiece it is!

This first volume lays the genealogical foundation of the series which deals with two competing families, the Rougons and the Macquarts, both originally descending from one woman who has children by two men and therefore there are two brands of the family tree, a division in blood that will have its effect through the generations to come.

I was so surprised by Zola’s modern feel-writing! Very different from English Victorian novels of that same period. Big, sweeping and dark emotions are at play, like greed, jealousy, resentment and revenge. But also love, depicted in a love story between two young people that was both beautiful and heartbreaking to read. There were scenes in this novel that will stay forever with me.… (meer)

This book, La Curée (in English titled as The Kill), the second one in Émile Zola’s Rougon Macquart series, blew me out of my socks because of the topics it frankly deals with in 1871, when it was first published.

I mean: a stepmother and her stepson having a sexual affair, a gay footman having sex with the stableboys, a woman desiring to have sex with two men, a father visiting prostitutes together with his son. And I’m sure I’m forgetting a few more things.

That a novel like this was published during the second half of the nineteenth century is mind blowing. And next to addressing these daring topics, it’s also stunningly well written in a style that keeps you turning the pages.

But what this novel is essentially about, is greed. A man works himself up the ladder to richness and then cannot stop himself from getting more. He goes to lengths to earn more money, making victims (his wife, his friends, the poor) by the dozens. And he gets away with it. His wife, Renee, is also driven by greed, though in her case it’s not money but sex she’s after, and she too has no scruples to get it. In a time when sexual feelings of women were regarded as practically non existent to many men, Zola shows them all wrong. How shocked readers must have been!

A fantastic novel and a must read for lovers of nineteenth or English Victorian novels. I think that in England a book like this would have been unthinkable.… (meer)

In zijn omvangrijke romancyclus 'Les Rougon-Macquart' wil de Franse auteur Emile Zola (1840-1902) met wetenschappelijke pretenties de invloeden beschrijven van milieu en erfelijkheid over vijf generaties van een familie. In het zelfstandig leesbare vijfde deel 'La faute de l'abbé Mouret' (1875) voert hij de jonge Serge Mouret ten tonele die als 'levend lijk' van het seminarie kwam en een levensvreemde, Maria-vererende pastoor wordt in een Provençaals gehucht. Een erfelijk bepaalde zenuwzwakte doet hem lichamelijk bezwijken, maar op het naburige landgoed Paradou waar hij moet herstellen ontmoet hij het aldaar verblijvende 'wilde natuurmeisje' Andine. Volgens Zola zal zijn fout nu hierin bestaan dat hij na grote gewetensbezwaren de Religie verkiest boven de Natuur. De (goed vertaalde) roman is natuurlijk een product van zijn tijd ( karakters zijn zwart-wit, gevoelens extreem, intrige voorspelbaar, documentatie uitputtend), maar is sterk geschreven en heeft soms de lyrische dimensie van een meeslepend prozagedicht.
