Several people on the 75 Challenge group have read Aeronaut's Windlass and enjoyed it. It is a YA novel and a real departure from the norm for Butcher. The reviews of the book were excellent. I would say that for $4.00 you got a deal.

>8 benitastrnad: What makes it YA for you?
I agree that it was an excellent read and I'm looking forward to more in the series.

10benitastrnad
aug 4, 2017, 9:39 pm

That's the genre in which the publishers and the author placed it. It was marketed as Butcher's entry into YA literature. Is it YA? I don't know because I haven't read it, but I can tell you that there is lots of stuff being published that is classed as YA that isn't.

Several people over on the 75 Challenge group read this one and thought it was a good novel.

>10 benitastrnad:, >11 BookstoogeLT: In the UK it seems to be marketed to adult readers, and it's shelved there in bookshops. I read it and would say it could be enjoyed by both adult and YA. It's basically a steampunk adventure. I quite enjoyed it though less than some other people on here.

The American Library Association (ALA) uses the following ages or classing books. They are not the same ones that the publishers use.

Children's LIterature - newborn to age 14. (That is roughly newborn to Grade 8 or 9. Newborn to the end of Middle School.)
Young Adult - 12 to 18 (grades 7 - 12)

There is a new classification used by some publishers and that is "New Adult." This is for ages 18-25. It is not a classification used by ALA.

9 Georgette Heyer titles are 99p in today's Big Deal on Amazon.co.uk:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/b/ref=s9_acsd_al_bw_clnk_r?_encoding=UTF8&node=4725...

The titles are:

The Quiet Gentleman
The Talisman Ring
These Old Shades
Devil's Cub
Lady of Quality
Cotillion
Black Sheep
Sylvester
A Civil Contract

I know, not genre, but I've always enjoyed Heyer's books and unlike most historical romances they're well-researched and the characterisation fits the time period (i.e not modern people in fancy dress).

Today Amazon is offering deals on some that I can recommend:

Dies The Fire by SM Stirling. It is the start of a post-apocalypse series. The first one suffers a bit from some clunky writing, but they get better as the series progresses. It is one of those that is not easy to spend full price on but is worth $1.99.

Saint Peter's Fair by Ellis Peters - this is the only Brother Cadfael book I've read so far, but I really enjoyed it and definitely recommend.

Ride The Wind by Lucia St. Clair Robson is a grand adventure and my favorite of hers.

Died in the Wool
Death at the Dolphin

This is a bit like London buses - the UK has had barely any SF/F in the deals this year and then 50 come along at once...

It's been suggested this is as a part of the 2017 Gollancz Festival which runs until Sunday, so the deals may be around a bit longer than 24 hours. I got 5 books, and I already had at least 3 from earlier deals. Himself got 6 books and is considering some more.

>104 Maddz: Himself got Twelve Kings in an earlier deal and I have to say I wasn't that impressed. It was an OK read for me and I thought the mash-up of what appeared to be pre-Islamic elements with Islamic elements in a fantasy setting didn't work very well. If himself gets the sequel, I'll read it, but it won't be a move to the top of the TBR list. I'm also worried that if it's going to be 1 book per king, then the series is going to drag on.

105Maddz
Bewerkt: nov 3, 2017, 4:08 pm

Just in case anyone is confused: Alistair Reynolds Aurora Rising was previously published as The Prefect... The Gollancz listing, the cover and title page say The Prefect whereas the Amazon page calls it Aurora Rising (with a note at the bottom of the description 'Previously published as The Prefect').

It is a tie-in with the Gollancz Festival 2017 and the prices should hold good through the weekend: https://www.gollancz.co.uk/2017/11/gollancz-festival-ebook-sale/ (in case the Big Deal link disappears tomorrow).

None of those books appear to be on sale here in the US, but there are a couple of other Vonnegut's for $1.99. (I think they are God Bless You Mr. Rosewater and Galápagos.)

Oddly when I just went to Amazon and checked it looked like it was charging $7.99 for both of the books I tagged. And yet when I follow the link they emailed me I see them both as $1.99. So here is the link to all of the monthly sale books:

It looks like Tor has started their free eBook of the Month Club again. This month’s offering is The Eye of the World, the first book in The Wheel of Time. It’s only available through Thursday the 15th and only in the U.S. and Canada. You can get it here.

Alas, this particular offer is of absolutely no use to me, as anybody who has been reading my thread lately would know. :) But I definitely recommend it if there are any epic fantasy fans out there who haven’t read it yet.

The Fifth Season by N. K. Jemisin - $2.99 (clamairy has been shooting some bullets on this one lately in her thread.)
Leviathan Wakes by James S. A. Corey - $2.99. This is the first book in The Expanse.
Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie - $2.99
New York 2140 by Kim Stanley Robinson - $2.99
The Boy on the Bridge by M. R. Carey - $2.99 (I think this is a prequel to The Girl With all the Gifts.)

Their Finest Hour and a Half covers right before and during the Blitz in London. It is about a young woman who gets a job working at the Ministry of Information. The title refers to the making of a film about one of the many boat rescues of Dunkirk.

I thought it was well written. You learn about living in London during WWII. There is also a lot about the making of films, particularly propaganda films, not to mention being a woman in the workplace. The characters are well done and it is a good story, too.

1.99 USD at Kobo and Amazon Kindle.

I guess it's the U.S. Amazon site's turn for a "first in series" sale, because that's their Daily Kindle Deal today. Here's the link to the Amazon sale.

Below are some books that may be of interest, but there are quite a few others listed at the above link, including other genres.
The Color of Magic by Terry Pratchett - $1.99
The Wee Free Men by terry Pratchett - $1.99
Dawn by Octavia E. Butler - $1.13
Sabriel by Garth Nix - $1.99
The Black Company by Glen Cook - $2.99
City of Stairs by Robert Jackson Bennett - $2.99

I picked up those last two myself. They’ve been on my list but I haven’t caught them on sale before.

238Maddz
mei 20, 2018, 8:11 am

>237 YouKneeK: Book 10 of the Black Company series is coming out in the autumn (after years) which is probably why there's a sale now. You may want to look for Shadows Linger and The White Rose as well; the 3 books effectively form a sub-series within the overall series. Fingers crossed we get the sale as well - although I picked up these 3 as ebooks via the omnibus Chronicles of the Black Company (I still have my old paperbacks).

Be warned though, Cook's style on these is not to everyone's taste - I'd classify these as military fantasy and they're pretty gritty (and to a lesser extent grimdark) as well. If you find this too gritty, you could try the Dread Empire series - it's more of a straightforward epic fantasy.

>241 Maddz: Cook's been working on the next couple books for a number of years now. Port of Shadows looks to be a standalone story, and (like many of the short stories written since the original series ended) takes place sometime during the original trilogy. I believe the same will be true of the forthcoming "A Pitiless Rain".
