Showing of "Midnight's Children", based on the novel by Salman Rushdie At the stroke of midnight on August 15th, 1947, as India declares independence from Great Britain, two babies are switched at birth by a nurse in a Bombay hospital. And so it is that Saleem Sinai, the bastard child of a beggar woman, and Shiva, the only son of a wealthy couple, are fated to live the destinies meant for each other. Over the next three decades, Saleem and Shiva find themselves on opposite sides of many a conflict, whether it be because of class, politics, romantic rivalry, or the constantly shifting borders that are drawn every time neighbors become enemies and decide to split their newborn nation into two, and then three, warring countries. Through it all, the lives of Saleem and Shiva are mysteriously intertwined. They are also inextricably linked to the history of India itself, which takes them on a whirlwind journey full of trials, triumphs and disasters. Copies of Midnight's Children by Salman Rushdie will be available for purchase at the screening. Tickets for the movie can be purchased through the Pickford's website or at the door.

Alan Russell Signs in San Diego Local author Alan Russell was one of the first authors to sign a book on MGSD’s opening day in 1993. Alan returns with a new crime novel, Burning Man, introducing Special Cases Unit officer Michael Gideon and his K-9 partner, Sirius. Alan says, “Here is my Santa offering – Mysterious Galaxy is the place to go for Holiday shopping. During my signings, patrons that buy two copies of Burning Man get their choice of a hardcover copy of Multiple Wounds or Shame. And even if they already have those books it’s their chance to get a copy that they can give away as a holiday present. “I won’t be dressing up as Santa Claus, but I will play the part. BTW, years ago I was a mall Santa for a Christmas season, a job I took as research to write my as yet unpublished ‘St. Nick’ (the good news is the book has been optioned by three movie studios so far).” (bestem)… (meer)
Free Library of Philadelphia - Martin Amis - Lionel Asbo: State of England - Salman Rushdie - Joseph Anton: A Memoir Lionel Asbo: State of England Martin Amis Spanning four decades, a dozen novels, several short story collections and works of nonfiction, two screenplays, and hundreds of reviews and essays, Martin Amis’s influential career testifies to a lifetime devoted to literature. A writer who is “dark, satirical, and gifted with irascibility” (Los Angeles Times Book Review), Amis has been described as the undisputed master of what the New York Times called “the new unpleasantness.” English tabloid culture takes a beating in his new book, a characteristically gruesome satire about an unusually principled thug raising his bookish nephew. Joesph Anton: A Memoir Salman Rushdie After the 1989 publication of his novel The Satanic Verses led Iran’s Ayatollah Khomeini to issue a fatwa calling for his death, Salman Rushdie went underground, living under police protection for almost 10 years until the fatwa was lifted in 1998. He draws the title of his new memoir from the alias he adopted during this time, a combination of the first names of two writers he loved: Joseph Conrad and Anton Chekhov. Rushdie is the author of 16 books, including Midnight's Children, winner of the Booker Prize in 1981 and the “Booker of Bookers” Prize in 1993; Shalimar the Clown; and The Enchantress of Florence, which was named one of the Best Books of 2008 by the Washington Post. Salman Rushdie - Joseph Anton: A Memoir --- at Lisner Auditorium Monday, October 8, 7 p.m. at GW Lisner Auditorium 21st and H Streets, NW Salman Rushdie Joseph Anton: A Memoir (Random House, $30) Who is Joseph Anton? From 1989 until the Fatwa against him was rescinded, Salman Rushdie disappeared into a pseudonym he created from the names of two writers he admired: Joseph Conrad and Anton Chekhov. His new memoir is an account of the nine years he lived in hiding, during which he was constantly moved from one safe house to the next. He lived under perpetual threat, endured the end of a marriage—yet continued writing, with no loss to the signature wit and dark humor that make his fiction so distinctive.
This event is co-sponsored with The Center for Inquiry-DC. Salman Rushdie will be in conversation with Robert Siegel, host of NPR’s “All Things Considered.”

SALMAN RUSHDIE Credit: Alberto Conti Salman Rushdie in conversation with Tobias WolffTuesday, September 25, 12:30 p.m. Joseph Anton: A Memoir SORRY - EVENT IS SOLD OUT! On February 14, 1989, Valentine’s Day, Salman Rushdie was telephoned by a BBC journalist and told that he had been “sentenced to death” by the Ayatollah Khomeini. For the first time he heard the word fatwa. His crime? To have written a novel called The Satanic Verses, which was accused of being “against Islam, the Prophet and the Quran.”
So begins the extraordinary story of how a writer was forced underground, moving from house to house, with the constant presence of an armed police protection team. He was asked to choose an alias that the police could call him by. He thought of writers he loved and combinations of their names; then it came to him: Conrad and Chekhov—Joseph Anton.
Salman Rushdie is the author of eleven novels—including Grimus and Midnight’s Children (for which he won the Booker Prize and the Best of the Booker)—and one collection of short stories: East, West. He has also published three works of nonfiction: The Jaguar Smile, Imaginary Homelands: Essays and Criticism 1981–1991, and Step Across This Line, and coedited two anthologies, Mirrorwork and Best American Short Stories 2008. He is a former president of American PEN.
Tobias Wolff is the Ward W. and Priscilla B. Woods Professor of English at Stanford. He is known for his memoirs, particularly This Boy's Life (1989), and his short stories. His most recent collection of short stories, Our Story Begins, won The Story Prize for 2008. Other honors include the PEN/Malamud Award and the Rea Award - both for excellence in the short story - the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, and the PEN/Faulkner Award. This event is co-sponsored by India Community Center.

Are writers by their nature obsessed with all of these? Salman Rushdie is a world-famous author of landmark novels such as Midnight's Children, The Moor's Last Sigh, Haroun and the Sea of Stories, and most recently, Luka and the Fire of Life. Nayantara Sahgal is an acclaimed political commentator and author of nine novels and nine works of non-fiction. FREE, no ticket required. (wisemetis)… (meer)
