The list has 202 items; Callil and Tóibín could not agree on the best work of V.S. Naipaul, and of Saul Bellow, so each of their choices was included for those two authors. In addition the first edition stopped short of 200 (at 194) and invited readers to send in suggestions for the final six; these were included in subsequent editions.
